If you run a high-volume package operation with print-and-apply lines, you're outside desktop-printer territory entirely. And if you need photorealistic color labels for premium packaging, the GK420d's monochrome 203 DPI output will disappoint you. It's a barcode machine, not a graphic arts printer.

Consumables matter too. Zebra's own labels and ribbons cost more than generic alternatives. I used generic direct-thermal labels for about a year and strongly suspect they contributed to a printhead replacement sooner than I'd have liked—lucky for me, the warranty covered it. Now I budget around $0.02 to $0.04 per label, depending on size, and treat it as the cost of not having to think about printing.
