Why I ended up in a warehouse with a calculator watch
On a Tuesday in April 2025, I stood at a warehouse workstation with a Mac mini, a roll of 4×6 thermal labels, and a calculator watch on my wrist. I wore the watch because I was testing it for a promotional bundle. It turned out to be the easiest thing I dealt with all morning.
I'm the quality/compliance manager at an office products distributor. I review every item before it reaches customers—roughly 200+ unique products a year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 12% of first deliveries because of missing manuals, wrong drivers, or specs that didn't match the box. I'm not an IT specialist. I can't talk about VLANs or Bonjour routing. Installing a Zebra printer on a Mac is not like plugging in a consumer inkjet. macOS often won't even show the printer until the official Zebra driver is installed. That's the step most quick-start cards forget to mention.
Here's what happened:
- I connected the ZP450 to the Mac with USB.
- I opened System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- I clicked “+” and waited.
- The Zebra printer wasn't listed.
I rebooted. Still nothing. I called our support lead. “Did you install the driver?” he asked. I hadn't. The silence on the phone was polite, but I could tell this was not the first time.
Let me rephrase that: I'd expected macOS to auto-detect the printer like a typical USB device. It won't. With the Zebra ZP450, the driver is the key.
I went to the Zebra support page, downloaded the driver for macOS, installed it, and repeated the setup steps. This time, the ZP450 showed up under USB. I added it, changed the media type to 4×6, and printed a test label.

Five years ago, installing a label printer on a Mac was less predictable. As of 2025, the driver step is unavoidable. The fundamentals haven't changed: you still need the right driver, a working connection, and a test print. But the execution has changed. What was best practice in 2020 can leave you staring at an empty printer list in 2025. Driver first is a no-brainer after this.
So the next time you're installing a Zebra printer, do yourself a favor: install the driver first, then add the printer. And if you're still stuck, walk it off. By the time you're back, the test label might already be in your hand.
